Limiting Our Environmental Footprint

By their very nature, operations in the agri-food sector—and more specifically in animal protein—will always exert pressure on global ecosystems. As a result, companies in the sector must constantly innovate with solutions that are both economically viable and ecologically sustainable. At Olymel, we understand where our best levers for action lie, so that we can continue to offer quality products while reducing our environmental footprint.

Sector Challenges : Multiple Levers for Action

Climate change – reducing our emissions and building resilience

1

Optimizing our energy consumption

2

Effective water management – consumption and discharge

3

Maximizing the circularity of our residual materials and packaging

4

Optimizing our transportation and storage logistics

A Tailored Approach

We aim to reduce our direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 25% by 2030, compared to 2020 levels. Our heat recovery projects initiated in 2019 have paid off. This secondary energy has significantly reduced natural gas consumption in our plants in Saint-Esprit, Yamachiche, and Sainte-Rosalie.

Our operations have long embodied the concept of circularity. We maximize the value of carcasses by transforming them into by-products for various industries. Our sludge, manure, and slurry are converted into solid by-products, agricultural fertilizers, and renewable natural gas through biomethanation.

We continuously optimize our storage and transportation logistics by revisiting our routes, minimizing the footprint of our packaging, maximizing our loads, and improving our driving practices.

On the water front, our operations teams are always on the lookout for solutions to minimize water consumption while optimizing our effluent treatment systems. At the Saint-Esprit plant, tertiary treatment transforms wastewater into potable water, now supplying 50% of the water needed for plant operations.
